CULVER CITY, CALIF. (July 31, 2013) - Skyler Hornback, a 12-year-old 7th grader from Sonora, Ky., won $66,600 on today's episode of JEOPARDY!, setting records for the highest one-day total in Kids Week history and the third-highest one-day total in JEOPARDY! history. To watch a video of his win, please visit CBS Press Express (video available after 8 p.m. ET).
"I never dreamed I would set a Kids Week record," said Hornback, who plans to use his winnings to pay his college education. "It's still hard for me to believe this small town boy from Kentucky actually appeared on JEOPARDY! and won!"
During his on-air interview with JEOPARDY! host Alex Trebek, Hornback mentioned his ability to recite the Gettysburg Address from memory and his affinity for all things related to Abraham Lincoln.
"Lincoln is a very intriguing figure because most people think they know him when they really don't," Hornback said. "There was so much behind that beard and top hat that people just do not realize."
As luck would have it, the Final JEOPARDY! category for that day's game was THE CIVIL WAR. Feeling confident in his knowledge of the subject, Hornback made a huge, gutsy wager.
"After I wrote down the $30,000 wager, I spent quite a few moments thinking about what I had done," said Hornback. "Then, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and jabbed the pen on the submit button before I had any second thoughts. I'm really glad I did."
JEOPARDY! airs locally in the Sonora area at 3 p.m. ET on WNKY-TV (NBC). For other markets, check local listings for air times.
JEOPARDY!, the winner of a 2011 Peabody Award and 30 Emmy Awards, including the 2012 Emmy for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Program, was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most awards won by a TV Game Show.
