Gilbert began his career as a singer with a dance band in his native Newport News, Virginia, while he was still in high school. He became Master of Ceremonies, Comic and Singer in a Jacksonville, Florida, nightclub upon graduation. From there he went on a theatre tour as a Singing Master of Ceremonies, a tour that gave him a stronger background as a full-time nightclub performer. As such, Gilbert entertained in clubs from coast to coast - from Bimbo's in San Francisco to the Hotel Bradford in Boston.

Following a tour with the United States Army, he received his first television assignment as Master of Ceremonies and featured singer on WDSU in New Orleans. This led to a similar assignment in Nashville. From there he went to New York, where he became Host of ABC-TV's "Music Bingo". During this time he also recorded an album and several singles.

His next move was to Los Angeles as Master of Ceremonies of KTLA-TV's "Words and Music". It was during this time that he was introduced to movie audiences through a role in "Gidget Goes Hawaiian".

Gilbert went back to New York to work with Bill Cullen on ABC-TV's highly successful show, "The Price Is Right". From there he was contracted by AVCO BROADCASTING for "The Johnny Gilbert Show", a live five-day-week 90 minute variety show. This show continued for two years until METRO MEDIA beckoned him to become Host of "Fast Draw" in New York.

Following a year on "Fast Draw", BING CROSBY PRODUCTIONS brought him back to Los Angeles for an assignment as Master of Ceremonies on "Beat The Odds". At the conclusion, he became the Host of TV's "Dialing for Dollars" in Los Angeles for two and one half years. During that time, he also took time to be the Singing Host for the television special, "Christmas in Los Angeles".

Johnny has worked as an Announcer and Audience Host on "Dinah", "Sports Challenge", "The People's Choice Awards", "The Emmy Awards", "Dream House", "The $25,000 Pyramid", "The Million Dollar Chance of a Lifetime", "Love Connection" and "Circus of the Stars". Currently, he is the Announcer and Audience Host on "Supermarket Sweep" and "JEOPARDY!".
