Desiderantes meliorem patriam (“They desire a better country”) is the motto inscribed on the Order of Canada, an honor recently bestowed upon Alex Trebek. First established in 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II to recognize a cross section of outstanding dedication and service to society, it is the highest achievable civilian merit in Canada.
Alex was named an officer, the second highest of three levels within the Order of Canada, for achievement and service at a national scale. Cited for his continuing commitment to educational, environmental and humanitarian causes, Alex received his medal from newly appointed Governor General Julie Payette with his family in attendance. He later told CBC News that receiving the honor was “more emotional than I thought it was going to be,” and that he was humbled to be included among such accomplished honorees.
